Dressing for Your New Year's Resolution

The start of the new year brings with it new hopes, rules, and plans for us to become our best selves. With 365 days (give or take) of a challenge ahead, it’s wise to take all the help you can get. Find out how your element can make the most of your wardrobe so you can keep up with the promises you made on NYE.

Exercise More

Whether it’s in the interest of a healthy lifestyle, losing weight, or just plain fun, there’s a good chance ‘excercise’ is on your New Year’s resolution list. (Yes, list. Fire signs aren’t known for sitting still and you’ve probably got a few objectives for the new year.)

Try out bike shorts, the latest athleisure trend, when you hit the track this year (you may find you like them enough for the rest of your day). If you’re looking to mix some attitude and style into your workout, add crop tops or leopard print to your gym bag. And, please, skip the makeup.

Remember – you don’t need to overhaul your closet in name of good health. New workout gear can be fun, but try to keep the break out of your closet proportional with your lifestyle. For example, if you’re at the office five days a week and on the treadmill twice a week, you probably need more suits and slacks than yoga pants.

Consider Adding: Save Money

If you’re open to adding another item to your resolution list, think about a financial objective. Fire signs are known for their optimism and activity, which, when left unchecked, can do real damage to your checkbook.

Aside from keeping your workout gear costs low, you can start by evaluating the expenses that go into your exercise plans. Can you get a discounted gym membership or reimbursement for that gym through work? Do you have or need a workout buddy for extra accountability to make the most of your gym fees? Bonus if you’ve got friends who you can work out with in lieu of a happy hour so you can both save money on drinks while you break a sweat.

Stop Procrastinating

Anyone who loves a water sign will tell you they’re too hard on themselves. As such, that probably means your resolution is focused on self-improvement, and procrastination is something the best of us will struggle with at times. If you think you need a little extra boost to get a handle on your procrastination habit, add elements of green to your look to bolster your practicality and bring your goals into focus. Olive and deep blue-greens will be big for the next few months.

When it comes to your wardrobe, think about the tasks you procrastinate on, like laundry or donating old items, and try to tackle those activities right away when the time comes. It’s also entirely possible you’ve been using your closet to procrastinate (like folding tee shirts when you really should be studying), and once you recognize your habits, you can address them.

Don’t let yourself put off picking up new pieces or putting together outfits for big events. Pack ahead of time, then edit. Try services like StitchFix or Trunk Club if you’re struggling to pull the trigger on a new outfit or item, so you can try before you buy, but on a deadline to return the box.

Consider Adding: Learn a New Skill

Self-expression is paramount for water signs, but sometimes, you need a new medium. If you’ve been feeling stuck in a rut, release that frustration by adding a new skill to your repertoire. While artistic talents are often the first idea that comes to mind and a great place to start, don’t forget about more technical skills.

You may find you want to express yourself through a new art form, or maybe you’ll use a new technical skill like coding or cooking to create an opportunity for expression.

Get Organized

Let’s be honest – you’re already pretty organized. But there’s something about organizing that feels calming and reassuring, and if there’s something in your world that you could use a little extra planning or strategy, go for it!

To get the most out of the time you spend on your organizational projects this year, identify a few dark blue pieces you can add to various outfits to increase self-awareness and facilitate new perspectives. The best organizational systems will be designed when you’re realistic about your needs and habits, but open to new ideas.

When it comes to organizing your closet, remember that it’s not just about making sure everything fits! Use your closet’s physical layout to help you build outfits faster and more confidently. Make sure you can see your options easily, so you won’t be tempted to slip back into your go-to’s every day. For added style, think of your accessories as decoration even while they’re at rest. Displaying your shoes, scarves, jewelry, etc beautifully will bring calm to your closet on a visual level while also sparking inspiration for your latest look.

Consider Adding: Prioritize Self-care

Earth signs are the givers of the zodiac. Responsible, reliable, patient…all good things, until they’re not. Make sure you’re giving as much to yourself as you are to everyone else.

You can start small, like choosing to wear your most comfortable pieces or taking the extra time for yourself to select an outfit that leaves you feeling like a rockstar all day long. If it’s in the budget, consider dressing up and taking yourself on a date (dinner and a movie?) or splurging on the trend item you’ve been eyeing for weeks.

Air Signs

Libra
Aquarius

Not Making One

Air: the element of shifting, short-term focus. Rather than tie yourself to a principle for the year, and wind up frustrated (again) when your priorities shift before the snows have melted, you’re probably not going to bother with a resolution.

Don your best blue-green pieces to give you the patience to deal with all the people excitedly setting resolutions that you’ll have to talk to. Remember that some people really do find value in setting a new year resolution, even if you’re not among them, and sometimes it’s just a fun way to talk about priorities and interests.

Instead of prepping for this new year’s new you, spend some time researching upcoming trends or planning your next party look (like the low-key death of the ankle boot).

Consider Adding: Charity Work

If you’re considering setting a resolution, but you don’t know what you’d really want to stick with all year long, think about adding charity work to your routine. There are an abundance of organizations that would benefit from your skills and energy, allowing you to choose the right fit no matter what you’re getting up to in the new year.

Decide on a cadence or number of hours you’d like to donate by the end of the year, then research a few local groups that you would like to work with. Aside from an old-fashioned Google search, you can find opportunities at websites like United WayVolunteerMatch, or Idealist to get started!
